Governor Quinn signs historic anti-bullying legislation on Pride Sunday!

Governor Quinn signed SB 3266 into law today at a public ceremony at Nettlehorst school. SB 3266, Prevent School Violence Illinois, defines bullying for the first time in Illinois state law, lists the categories of students against which bullying is explicitly prohibited including sexual orientation and gender identity, and creates the Illinois Bullying Prevention Task Force. The Alliance championed this legislation and has been organizing statewide in anticipation of its introduction. In her remarks to the crowd gathered at Nettlehorst school that included Congressman Mike Quigley, Representatives Gabel and Feigenholtz, and Illinois Department of Human Rights Director Rocco Claps, Shannon Sullivan, Executive Director of the Alliance said the the signing of this legislation, "gives students and families a powerful tool in helping stop the violence in Illinois schools." Governor Quinn, explaining the importance of SB 3266, remarked, "We need to live in a civil society, where everyone is in and no one is out."
