Thursday, October 6th, 2011: Listen in to WBEZ's latest monthly installment of Schools on the Line--a call-in show with Chicago Public Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard.  This month the show only took calls from youth under 21 and three of the on-air questions Brizard took were from a listening party the Alliance hosted in partnership with Affinity Community Services.  Alliance and Affinity youth leaders asked Brizard about restorative versus punitive discipline practices, inclusion of LGBTQ people and topics into curricula and the provision of professional development to CPS personnel on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Wednesday, May 18, 2011: Alliance Executive Director Shannon Sullivan speaks to CBS news about how punitive school discipline does not work to change bullying behaviors in schools instead offering the alternative of using social and emotional learning to build empathy and pro-social skills in this featured news story.

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011: The Chicago Tribune reports on the ruling that students at Nequa Valley High School in Naperville are allowed to wear shirts that read 'Be Happy. Not Gay.'  In the article, Shannon Sullivan, Alliance Executive Director, affirms that students' freedom of expression should not be limited, but students should be given the tools to think about the consequences of their actions.

Saturday, November 6th, 2010: The New York Times features the work of the Alliance in a story about the culture wars around teaching about LGBTQ families in schools.  Read the story here.

Thursday, October 28th, 2010: The Alliance, represented by youth leaders Britney Fryer of Walter Payton HS and Anna Rangos of Maine South HS and Executive Director, Shannon Sullivan, were guests on Chicago Public Radio's 848 to discuss the youth-led work in Illinois to ensure schools are addressing sexual orientation and gender identity and engaging in tranformative system-change to become spaces where all youth are valued.  Listen to the interview!
